Description

For nearly five decades, glass artist Josh Simpson has been exploring ways to express his fascination with outer space and astrophysical themes. Lines of magnetism swirling around a black hole … clouds of matter coalescing as a star comes into existence … the remote point in the universe where our galaxy’s influence ends and deep space begins. These phenomena and many more inspire his creative process.

Simpson is known for his exquisite goblets, vessels, sculptures, and especially his unique solid glass Planets that depict imaginary worlds. This book focuses on yet another aspect of Simpson’s work: Stellar Disks.

These large plates resemble images of distant stars and nebulae. New Mexico disks are reminiscent of a peaceful night sky. Saturns depict fiery star plasma swirling around a planet or Black Hole. And Josh's Corona, Hyperspace and Galaxy glass suggests – in vibrant hues and dazzling patterns – energetic phenomena such as gravitational lensing, galaxy formation, and X-ray radiation.

Each illustrated work is accompanied by a brief narration in Simpson's own voice, explaining what he was trying to accomplish or regaling us with tales of discovery, calamity, and surprise.

Purchase signed copies of this compendium showing Simpson's vibrant solid glass plates and platters. Perfect to include with a gift or to peruse while admiring your own Simpson Glass collection!
